Minted around Thanksgiving 1986, it took the perseverance of Senator McClure before the Senate passed the bill authorizing it. It essentially preserved the value of silver in the US because before the minting, the government wanted to sell the silver in the National Defense Stockpile. However, every time this was proposed the price of silver plummeted. McClure’s bill however provided a way of re-using the silver stockpile while preserving the value of silver and even increase its appreciation.

Because of its one dollar face value, the Silver Eagle coin is mostly uncirculated. Rather it holds a sentimental value for those who remember circulating silver dollars of long ago.

By publishing its composition and its purity, the government has helped the value of the Silver Eagle coin a great deal since buyers take this as a sort of guarantee of the coin’s worth even in the future.  This is further proven in 2002 when a new bill was passed into law to extend the minting of the coins even though the silver stockpile was near depletion.

The mints are now authorized to buy silver from the open market to make more coins. This has made the coins only more valuable. The current economic depression further increased demands for American  Silver Eagle coins so much that sales to authorized dealers were suspended briefly then later the coins were rationed. Yet a decision had to be made to suspend minting the proof and uncirculated collectible coins to meet unprecedented demands for the bullion version. While it’s been two years since suspension of minting any but the bullion coins, it’s still unclear if minting proof Silver Eagle coins will resume.

All these have contributed to increase the value of American Silver Eagle coins considerably. Investing in these coins has always been attractive and now ever more valuable. They are even much more valuable to a collector and if you can find a dealer who has them, well, then by all means, invest.
